Dominican Sisters in Slovenia
The two houses in Slovenia belong to the congregation: Suore Domenicane di S. Caterina da Siena, Roma. It was founded the year 1852 by mother Gerin Fabre, who as a young woman, loved to contemplate the Pieta. Rapt in silent prayer before the representation of Mary holding the disfigured and lifeless body of Jesus in her arms, her heart was opened up by compassion, from which sprang the ardent desire to help others in their need.
Today the congregation is present in 13 countries, on 4 continents: Italy, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Peru, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria, Uganda, Guadalupe, France, Spain, and Slovenia.
The two communities in Slovenia, Piran and Petrovče, are part of the small delegation called the "delegation of the frontiers". It comprises of 3 communities: Piran 3 sisters, Petrovče 4 sisters and Tamai (a community in Italy) 3 sisters. We are directly dependent on the mother general who nominates the delegate from one of the sisters in the delegation. The delegation is international and very flexible, because sisters come from different parts of the congregation.
The delegation was founded in 2006 with the desire to courageously respond to the needs of people near the frontiers. Our mission is to give testimony through free service, dialogue, sharing and communion in these lands, which particularly call to the word of Jesus: “that they may be one”. We also have a commitment of life to be signs of the dialogue between God and man, to live in the ecumenical spirit, and to be testimonies of unity in diversity, considering the fact that our communities are international. Our apostolate consists mostly of pastoral work in parishes, with children, youth, adults, and of bringing the Eucharist to the sick and the elderly in their homes, going to parishes and schools to give testimonies and lectures on specific topics, and due to the fact that our parish is a Marian shrine and a place of pilgrimage, we also receive the pilgrims.
Institution of the Communities
The community of Piran was erected on the 9th of september 1998, and that of Vrhnika was on the 1st of October of the same year. The community of Petrovče was erected on the 23rd of October, 1998, having to welcome the community of Vrhnika who terminated her mission of the congregation in that place.
